Cape Henlopen High School students earn Scholastic Art Awards

April 2, 2026

Sixteen Cape Henlopen High School students in grades nine to 12 have been recognized as Scholastic Art Award winners, a national program that celebrates creativity and artistic achievement among students in grades seven to 12.

The Scholastic Art Awards program is one of the nation’s longest-running and most-respected student art competitions, recognizing original student work across a wide range of visual art categories. Submissions are judged on originality, technical skill and personal voice.

This year, Cape High students were honored for artwork that demonstrated creativity, craftsmanship and thoughtful expression. Their recognition reflects both individual talent and the strong arts instruction and mentorship at Cape High.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for earning Scholastic Art Awards,” said Ragan Callahan, a Cape High art teacher. “These awards recognize not only artistic skill, but also the courage to express ideas and perspectives through creative work.”

Students earning Scholastic Art Awards receive Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention distinctions, with Gold Key works advancing to the national level. Award-winning pieces may also be displayed in regional exhibitions and publications.

Students earning Gold Key awards are: Jehieli Arevalo-Avalos (grade 10), Lindsay Gross (grade 11), Daisy Mastriana (grade 11), Anika Sehgal Sekhri (grade 10) and Olivia Wang (grade 9). Silver Key award recipients are: Emmi Condon (grade 10), Olivia Lam (grade 10), Paige Lanouette (grade 11), Zoe Mills (grade 10) and Evelyn Monterroso-Ruiz (grade 10). Earning Honorable Mention awards are: McKinzie Cartwright (grade 12), Maile Godwin (grade 11), Evan Johnson (grade 10), Daphne Anne Rualo (grade 11), Will Runde (grade 11) and Noah Wilson (grade 11).

“Seeing these students recognized through the Scholastic Art Awards is incredibly rewarding,” said Cape High Principal Kristin DeGregory. “Their work reflects creativity, dedication, and a willingness to take risks through artistic expression. These students poured their voices, ideas and passion into their art, and this recognition is a testament to both their talent and the support system created by our teachers and families. We are especially grateful to Mrs. Callahan, whose guidance, encouragement and expertise helped our students grow as artists and find confidence in their creative voices.”

The Cape Henlopen School District remains committed to supporting the arts as an essential component of a well-rounded education, providing students with opportunities to explore creativity, develop technical skills and share their voices through artistic expression.
